The 3rd "Somatics Course" now offers an extended and more powerful format!
Introductory Course in the Foundations of Somatic Therapy:
- For psychotherapists, bodyworkers and interested lay persons.
- Participants gain an experiential and theoretical understanding of basic elements of modern body psychotherapy.
- In somatic therapy, which is grounded in the Core Energetics model, we will explore principles of anatomy, neurophysiology, neurobiology, the science of trauma and the New Physics. Course members will also learn how to implement selected elements into their their own life and clinical practice as appropriate.

Why therapists study Body Psychotherapy?
The connection between body, emotions, mind and soul is very powerful! It offers incredibly powerful levels of access to the client's emotions to the skilled practitioner. Unfortunately, many therapists do not have somatic training or feel uncomfortable in dealing with the energies of the body. Others hate anatomy, are simply worried to do something wrong or are afraid to elicit overly strong emotional reactions in their clients. Whatever therapists limitations may be, this course is designed to help them to become grounded and comfortable with the body as an integral aspect of therapeutic interventions.
The Foundation: Understanding the mind-body connection
This course will introduce the basic concepts of body-centered psychotherapy. The information will be grounded in the Character Analytic model that has been pioneered over the past 50+ years by Wilhelm Reich, MD ("Medical Orgonomy"), Alexander Lowen, MD ("Bioenergetics"), John Pierrakos, MD ("Core Energetics"), amongst many others.
Emotions arise from the body?
To understand how emotions arise from the body, we will review basic anatomy and physiology. We will explore the current understanding of brain science and study the complex bio-psychological mechanisms that make us a human beings (Shore, Damasio, Siegel, Amen, van der Kolk). Where applicable, connections to trauma science (Levine, Ogden & Minton) and psychosomatic medicine will be made.
What you will learn?
- Learn how to interpret the "Language of the Body" by tracking the basic patterns of muscular holding and mental attitudes ("Character Structure") as expression of specific emotional conflicts.
- Learn about the psychobiology of relatedness: how the body communicates with itself and its surroundings via brain, nervous system, hormones, neurotransmitters, immune substances, the energetic systems (chakras and aura), etc.
- Get in touch with basic principles of the life force ("energy") in health and illness with links to psychosomatic medicine.
- Personally have practical experiences of how body-centered therapy techniques may be applied to any therapeutic modality (for example, increased grounding, containment, here-and-now, body awareness).
- Explore basic tools to assist your clients in their emotional process while respecting professional boundaries of particular clinical settings that may not allow direct physical interventions.
NO PRIOR BODYWORK EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY!
Kuno's goal is to present the complex and holographic mind-body-energy interactions in a creative, pragmatic and practice-oriented way. We hope that this course will be fun, "hands-on," personally engaging, enlivening, spiritually enriching and transformational.
Who are the target groups?
The main target groups are practicing therapists, counselors, bodyworkers and similar professions. Interested laypersons will be accepted at the discretion of the leader. The course will be tailored to fit the needs and skill levels of its participants. It will include a dynamic mix of multimedia presentations, dialogue and practical demonstrations. Most importantly, together we will create a safe and comfortable space to explore personal experiences from various body-centered exercises.
What does a training day look like?
9:AM AM - 6:30 PM with lunch and coffee breaks
The program will be divided in three sections:
- Personal Process: Experiential work in Group process setting (2 hours)
- Theory and Practice of Body-psychotherapy: (3hours)
a) "The Mind-Body Connection": The neuroscience of somatic psychology & psychosomatics.
b) Introduction to Core Energetics Theories:
Wilhelm Reich, the Character model, Map of the Personality, Segemental Armoring, Resistance, etc.
c) Energy & Consciousness: Charge and discharge, chakras, spiritual approach, etc.
- Practicum: Practice sessions, bodywork demonstrations and applications for practice.
Translating the theory into individual therapy practice. Q+A. (2 hours)
IMPORTANT:
- You will learn by experience and through self-exploration. This class is participatory, hands-on and experiential.
The learning is based on your own personal process. This may bring up emotional material for participants and may not be appropriate for everyone. Participants must be able to deal with moderate emotional and physical stress! Please check with the leader before registration if you have any concerns!
- This course is designed ONLY as an introduction to this kind of work and as an inspiration for further professional exploration. It is not designed as a replacement for personal therapy, nor a substitute for proper training in a body-therapy modality, usually is four-year intensive training program with intensive supervision.

Is there homework and reading?
A reading list, handout material and some files on discs or via e-mails will be provided during the course of the seminar.
Some home study is highly recommended but is not required.

Core Energetics as an example of a mind-body healing modality:
Core Energetics is an evolutionary process of personal transformation. It combines methods of body-psychotherapy, energy work and spiritual grounding. It is based on the work of psychiatrist John Pierrakos, MD. His work focused on bringing mind, body and soul together. The basic aim is to help a person live from their Core, a state of pleasure, truth and harmony that is reached when a person is in full energetic flow. This approach includes deep bodywork, breathwork, expressive techniques for emotional release and is grounded in the spiritual philosophy of the Pathwork.
Kuno Bachbauer, MD:
Graduated from University of Vienna Medical School in 1978. Unsatisfied with the scope of traditional medicine, he soon focused on exploring various personal growth methods that included both the body and spirituality.
Kuno is certified in Core Energetics Evolutionary Process and on the Senior Faculty of the Institute of Core Energetics East, N.Y. He has also taught Core Energetics to students in Brazil, Mexico and Australia. He is regarded as an innovative, creative and dynamic teacher and presenter.
